• The Sherman Firefly Mk.VC became a vital asset for Allied armored units as the fighting in Western Europe intensified during World War II. Based on the Sherman V chassis, the Firefly was armed with the powerful British 17-pounder gun, giving Allied forces a tank capable of defeating German Panthers and Tigers at effective combat ranges. Although its long gun and limited ammunition stowage presented challenges, the Firefly’s firepower fundamentally shifted the balance of armored engagements in favor of the Allies.
• The Polish 1st Armoured Division, famously known as the “Black Devils” due to their black berets and fierce battlefield reputation, was equipped with Sherman Firefly Mk.VC tanks during the Normandy campaign. Commanded by General Stanisław Maczek, the division landed in France after the initial D-Day assaults and quickly proved itself as a disciplined and aggressive fighting force.
