- HISTORY ASPECTS:
- The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb BL924 was part of a special group of aircraft known as “Presentation Spitfires,” funded by donations from occupied or allied nations as symbols of solidarity during World War II. Bearing the name “Valdemar Atterdag,” after the medieval Danish king, BL924 represented Denmark’s contribution to the Allied war effort following the country’s occupation by Nazi Germany. These presentation aircraft carried deep symbolic value, serving both as frontline fighters and as morale-boosting emblems for pilots and ground crews alike.
- Assigned to No. 234 “Madras Presidency” Squadron of the Royal Air Force, BL924 operated from RAF Ibsley in southern England during the spring of 1942. At this stage of the war, the Spitfire Mk.Vb was the RAF’s primary single-seat fighter, tasked with air defense, offensive fighter sweeps, and escort missions over occupied Europe. The squadron played a key role in countering German fighter incursions and supporting the growing Allied offensive posture across the English Channel, particularly during the intensifying air war following the Battle of Britain.
- Pilot Officer Aksel Svendsen, a Danish volunteer flying with the RAF, was one of several pilots from occupied nations who joined the Allied cause. Flying BL924, Svendsen participated in combat operations connected to the wider European air conflict of World War II, including fighter patrols and offensive “Rhubarb” and “Circus” missions aimed at engaging Luftwaffe aircraft and disrupting German defenses in northern France. These operations were dangerous and costly but essential in maintaining pressure on German air power during the critical middle years of the war.
- This 1:72 scale model offers collectors a beautifully detailed tribute to an aircraft that combined frontline combat service with powerful national symbolism, making it a standout piece for anyone interested in World War II aviation history and the international spirit of the Allied air forces.
